Unceremoniously Retired. Still Designing.

After more than 30 years as an interior designer, I've unceremoniously retired. No farewell party, no grand announcement, and certainly no plans to reinvent myself. I've simply decided it's time to step away from client projects and spend more time on my own.

Of course, a designer never really stops designing. It's a way of seeing things, solving problems, and finding opportunities to make something better, more functional, or simply more interesting. That part of me isn't going anywhere.

So, What Happens Now?

For starters, there are plenty of projects around our antique farmhouse that have been waiting for attention. This winter, I'll be transforming Tom's rather uninspiring office into a cozy den and music room, complete with guitars, comfortable seating, and a place to enjoy a good whiskey. Designing for ourselves, without deadlines or client approvals, sounds pretty appealing.

I'll continue gardening, experimenting with new ideas around the property, and sharing what works (and what doesn't) through The Nosey Gardener. Gardening has become another creative outlet, although Mother Nature isn't always the most cooperative client.

There will be more time in the kitchen, too. I've developed a real interest in sourdough baking, cooking from scratch, and sharing some of those adventures. And, of course, Tom and I will continue traveling, often with our motorhome, discovering interesting places and documenting our experiences through Wine & Whiskey Travelers.

I'll also continue my volunteer work with organizations that matter to me, including the Wolfeboro Garden Club and the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society.

What About Julie Fergus American Home?

This website isn't retiring. I'll continue sharing thoughts on timeless design, home improvement, gardening, and the everyday pleasures of making a home. After three decades in the business, I certainly haven't run out of opinions about design!

The difference is that I'll be creating and sharing because I want to, not because I have to. No schedules to maintain, no pressure to produce content, and no obligation to turn every interest into a business.

I've always believed in creating a life you don't need a vacation from. These days, that means enjoying the life we've created, taking on projects when inspiration strikes, and having the freedom to decide what comes next.

Retired from the business. Not from being creative.
