About Julie
I no longer design professionally, but design is still part of my everyday life.
For more than 30 years, I worked as a professional interior designer, helping clients build, renovate and create homes that reflected the way they wanted to live. It was a career I loved and one that took me from my own design studio and retail storefront to projects throughout New England and beyond.
These days, I'm not looking for the next design project. I've been there, done that — and I'm enjoying what comes next.
Design, however, doesn't simply disappear when you stop taking clients. It shapes the way you see things. I still notice how a room works, how a house connects to its surroundings, how color changes a space, how a garden is composed, and all the little details that can make a place feel welcoming and comfortable.
Julie Fergus American Home is where that experience meets the life I'm living now.
A Little Background
I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design and spent more than three decades as a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). I am NCIDQ qualified, and my design work has been featured in national and regional publications.
Over the years, I designed everything from new homes and major renovations to kitchens, baths and individual rooms. That work remains an important part of who I am, and you'll still find a portfolio of selected projects here.
But home has always meant more to me than interior design.
Life Beyond the Design Studio
My husband, Tom, and I live in an antique New Hampshire home that provides an endless supply of projects, ideas and occasional surprises. Our life here includes gardens, cooking, entertaining, old boats, house projects and simply enjoying the place we've created.
I also manage our Wolfeboro vacation cottage, something I've been doing since 2005. More than two decades of welcoming guests has given me plenty of opinions about vacation rentals, hospitality and what actually makes people comfortable away from home.
Then there are the gardens.
Through The Nosey Gardener, I visit passionate home gardeners and share the gardens they've created and the stories behind them. I'm much more interested in real gardens created by real people than perfection.
Having more control over my schedule has also made room for community involvement. I serve as Publicity Chair for the Wolfeboro Garden Club and manage its Facebook page, and I also manage the Facebook page for the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. It gives me a chance to use skills I've developed over the years while supporting organizations and activities I enjoy.
And through Wine & Whiskey Travelers, Tom and I share pieces of our life beyond the house — RV travel, food, gardening, boating, projects and wherever life happens to take us.
American Home Today
I've reached a point where I don't feel the need to fit everything I do into one category. Home, garden, travel, food, hospitality and design may look like separate interests, but to me they're connected. They're all part of creating and enjoying a life that feels like your own.
My years as an interior designer are still very much part of that story. I'm simply using the experience differently now.
