Mixing Patterns

July 7, 2017

The inspiration here is to mix patterns and create textures using fabric. For this bedding project colorful fabrics were chosen for my artist client that loves blue and yellow. Two patterns were chosen that work well together because of the difference in scale. My client wanted to bring out the yellows and blues and down play the less bright green yellow and create texture. A texture of the fabric was made by creating a band on the headboard that folded the fabric to highlight the yellow and blues. This provided an overall texture, and pattern and repeat was hidden. This was a way to create a visual pattern just by piecing the fabric parts.

The way to create successful mixing of pattern is to choose fabrics of the same color palette. Next you have to choose a variety of pattern types: plaids, stripes (wide and narrow), florals, solids, and geometric shapes. Different scales of patterns should be selected so that they complement and contrast one another.
